Concert Series: Music in Beautiful Spaces

Clara Schumann Piano Trio in G minor, Op. 17 (1846)
Robert Schumann Piano Trio No. 2 in F major, Op. 80 (1847)

Clara Schumann (1819-1896) was a German musician and composer, considered one of the most distinguished pianists of the Romantic era. She exerted her influence over a 61-year concert career, changing the format and repertoire of the piano recital and the tastes of the listening public. Her husband was the composer Robert Schumann. Together they encouraged Johannes Brahms. She was the first to perform publicly any work by Brahms. The Piano Trio in G minor is considered her masterpiece.

Robert Schumann (1810-1856) was a German composer and influential music critic. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of the Romantic era. Schumann left the study of law, intending to pursue a career as a virtuoso pianist. He had been assured by his teacher Friedrich Wieck that he could become the finest pianist in Europe, but a hand injury ended this dream. Schumann then focused his musical energies on composing. Schumann’s first two piano trios were written in close succession, despite the large gap between their opus numbers. The second piano trio is more effervescent and cheerful in mood than the first trio – the composer himself said that it makes a “friendlier and more immediate impression” than its predecessor.
