The Bass presents Found Shelter: Making Dirt Dauber Nests

August 5, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

In this collaborative creative session, artist Kerry Phillips invites participants to recreate Dirt Dauber nests built around found personal objects.

Dirt Daubers, or Mud Daubers, are a type of wasp that builds its nest with dirt and mud in sheltered places: under eaves, porch ceilings, in garages and sheds, or barns and attics. The nests are often found in and around forgotten objects.

Participants should bring a small found, forgotten or broken object they no longer need, along with a few cups of dirt or mud. These objects will be transformed into impromptu nests and shelters, converting burdensome trash into personalized artwork. The small nest sculptures will become part of Phillips’ upcoming exhibition: Between the mundane and the miraculous, on view at the Bass beginning August 17.

After the exhibition closes, the crafted nests can be returned to each participant as a new work of art.  The artist will have dirt on hand and a few extra objects, but participants are asked to bring their own.

Space is limited. RSVP required.
