The Bass Museum presents Maria Martinez-Canas: Revelations

October 20, 2022 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Join The Bass and IlluminArts for special musical performances at 6:30 & 7:45 PM

In this musical performance, IlluminArts will explore the layers of meaning beneath, within and beyond the new works Maria Martinez-Cañas created for her exhibition at The Bass, Absence Revealed.

The works in Absence Revealed came about through two personal events in Martinez-Cañas’ life: the loss of her mother and the chance finding of her Miami home’s original wallpaper while renovating. The artworks highlight physical and emotional processes of excavation: the act of revealing and uncovering, as well as the surfacing of pain, loss and absence. Martinez-Cañas created these works by collaging items from her personal archive of found objects, including materials that the artist’s mother had taken from Cuba during her exile in 1960, actively engaging with the ideas of memory and loss.

The musical program will be performed twice during the evening of October 20th for the Miami Beach Culture Crawl, first at 6:30 PM and again at 7:45 PM. The performance includes new improvisations by internationally renowned cellist Sæunn Thorsteinsdottir, and songs sung by soprano Nell Snaidas and mezzo-soprano Elise Quagliata, with Jenny Snyder and Koh Kazama collaborating on piano and guitar.

This event is free, registration and ticket is required. Space is limited, walk-in’s welcome based on space availability.
