Take advantage of this opportunity to enjoy the Garden on a day that it’s closed to the public! Miami Beach Botanical Garden’s horticulturist, Riki, will discuss her view on weeds in the Garden including when and why a plant is considered a weed. She will also go into how gardening can be used as a method of therapy and the positive effects that simple gardening tasks such as weeding can have on our mind and body. Attendees will break up into groups to weed various areas of the garden. While weeding, attendees are encouraged to focus on mindfulness, enjoying the surrounding nature, fresh air, sound of birds and running water; and stopping to look at their progress from time to time to see the difference they can make.

Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated (there is a water fountain to refill bottles), sun protection including a hat and sunscreen, garden gloves if you have them (we will provide garden gloves as needed), kneeling pad or something to put under your knees for comfort (we have very limited kneeling pads available), and clothes you do not mind getting dirty. Feel free to bring a journal to make notes on any reflections while weeding. This event will include kneeling, standing, and other physical movements. Attendees will be required to complete a liability waiver before participating in garden activities.
