Looking for Langston

January 27, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Looking for Langston (1989) is a lyrical exploration—and recreation—of the private world of poet Langston Hughes and fellow Black artists and writers who formed the Harlem Renaissance during the 1920s. Directed by Isaac Julien while a member of the Sankofa Film and Video Collective, the film fuses a ’20s Harlem speakeasy with an ’80s London nightclub, spaces that prompt questions around the nature of desire and the reciprocity of the gaze. Don’t miss your chance to see a special screening of a landmark New Queer Cinema work—one that is not available on streaming services—followed by moderated conversation.

This event is presented as part The Harlem Renaissance at 100: Perspectives and Possibilities, January 27 and 28, co-organized by The Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab and The Wolfsonian–FIU.
