String Quartet No. 3 (Mishima) originally appeared as parts of the film score for Mishima by filmmaker Paul Schrader. The film follows a complex narrative structure which divides the life of this famous contemporary Japanese novelist into three parts: his childhood, his mature years and the last day of his life. These subjects were intercut to produce a shifting kaleidoscopic vision of Mishima’s life. The scenes of his childhood were filmed in black and white and scored for string quartet.

An American composer, Philip Glass is widely regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the late 20th century. Glass’s work has been described as minimal music, having similar qualities to other “minimalist” composers such as La Monte Young, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. However, Glass has instead described himself as a composer of “music with repetitive structures”, which he has helped evolve stylistically. (In English and Japanese with English subtitles)
