“In a portrait, I am looking for the silence in somebody” Henri Cartier – Bresson

In this one-day workshop students will learn the basics of portrait photography. There will be discussions on the importance of light, natural and artificial, the different types of portraits and the results that can be achieved. We will review individual and group portraits and talk about what makes a good, natural portrait that honors and shows the character of the people we are photographing.

Students are invited to use all types of cameras, including phone cameras, to explore, with their classmates, the different possibilities when making a portrait.

The main goal is to learn the basics about portraiture in terms of the basic technical aspects, as well as to how to approach the subjects, whether they are familiar people or not, to achieve results that are satisfactory for both the photographer and the subject.

A few photos per student will be selected, shared, and reviewed with the group after the practices.

A few things you will learn:

• Basics of artificial lighting.
• Natural light.
• Composition.
• Backgrounds.
• Individual and group portraits.
• How to photograph familiar people versus people we are just meeting.
• Ethics and responsibilities of doing portraits.
