MBUS Live Art Talk 2020 with Marielle Plaiser

Marielle Plaisir was born in le Havre, Seine-Maritime, France. She lives and works in the USA. Plaisir spent her childhood and her adolescence in Normandie (France), before settling in Guadeloupe (French Caribbean Island). She’s working on blends life and fiction in self personal narratives and historical narratives from Caribbean touching on universal themes like power, domination and prejudice. She finds inspiration in italian quattrocento, latin, caribbean and American literature. She uses her daily practice to examine the
many aspects of the individual in the society. She uses textiles, fibers, fabrics which are socially meaningful.

Through her artworks she finds moments of humor and beauty and discovers evidence of humanity in our increasingly digital world. From monumental works, to itinerating in-situ exhibitions, along with books and illustrations for the youth and drawings for animation, Plaisir’s works demonstrate a strong urge to produce poetical pieces. Her essence is theatrical. Since 2002, Plaisir has exhibited in numerous group shows, and solos exhibitions throughout the world. She has participated in various International Biennials of Contemporary Art in Europe, Africa, Caribbean. As a textile-artist, she’s collaborating with The French designer furniture company Roche-Bobois ( Paris ).
