305 Pride: Screen Printing on Fabric

Whether it’s croquetas or chancletas, your favorite Hialeah thrift store or Pitbull lyrics, everyone in Miami has something they love or love to hate. Take the opportunity to create a unique piece of 305 swag, while also learning the basics of silkscreen printing.

Bring a bold black and white drawing, a high-contrast photo, or a digital design. Students will receive a demonstration in how to make their artwork “print-ready”, burn a screen and learn to screen print their design. Two tote bags per student will be provided, but feel free to hit the thrift shop and bring up to five additional items for printing. Fabric items just need to be flat to work well. Acceptable items include t-shirts, tote bags, bandanas, tea towels, or even skirts or jean jackets!

About the Instructor:

Nick Mahshie is a textile designer and artist from Miami, Florida. He holds a Masters of Design in Fashion, Body & Garment from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he worked under the renowned visual artist, Nick Cave, and a BFA in Painting from Rhode Island School of Design (’07).

As Oolite Arts’ printmaking resident, Mahshie will offer workshops and open studio hours to interested printmakers and those keen to expand their understanding and use of contemporary print processes.

Mahshie is also the Youth Programs Coordinator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, and has taught classes at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, New Orleans Museum of Art, Le Petit Bain (Paris) and the Children’s Museum of Art in New York City.
